Internet civility – if you disagree with me, you die

November 9, 2008

I realize that “Internet Civility” is as much of an oxymoron any phrase you could conjure, but I found a fun example of the lack of it recently.

I was scrolling some television reviews and followed a link about the show “Heroes” possibly being cancelled. The link in question actually pertained to a “Heroes” spinoff show called “Heroes – Origins.” Anyhow, the post I found had a classic comment thread.

A site user named “Illmatic” didn’t think much of “Heroes” lately and posting the following:

“Good…Heroes hella sucks now. Cancel the show, its show hookie now that it makes want to see re-runs of ManAnimal.”

A bit later on in the thread, a poster named “Jimmy” begged to differ:

“Illmatic probably agrees with most critics….. do you know where most tv and movie critics get their credentials from dumbass….”

Typical comment thread fodder. But then “Jimmy” took it further:

“i hope you die slow death moments before your first born comes into this world, your eyes slowly closing just before that little baby boy pops his head out of the retarded bitch that decided you were worthy of enter her…. seriously that would be some funny shit to happen to a sheep like you.”

The rest of the thread contains some surprised comments from those who would like to think you can express a diverging opinion online without being threatened with death.
